Home Inspector Training Information

Below we have included information on the licensing process and requirements as well as some more information about the training and HITI.

As you are likely aware, the WV State Fire Marshal requires all Home Inspectors to be trained by an approved in-classroom or Live Virtual training prior to becoming a Certified Home Inspector in the state of West Virginia.

**

There are no prerequisites for taking the training. However, the following is what's required by the WV State Fire Marshal to obtain your Home Inspectors license:

1. Check or money order payable to “WVSFMO” for $150.00
2. A completed, legible, signed and dated application form
3. A completed criminal record report and fingerprint check from the WV State Police & F.B.I.
4. Proof of general liability insurance of no less than $250,000.00
5. Proof of completing an approved 80 hour in-classroom or Live Virtual training course – This training is approved
6. Proof of passing the National Home Inspector Exam through EBPHI
7. Copy of High School or equivalent
8. Copy of valid West Virginia business license issued by the WV Department of Tax and Revenue

We focus on what you will see day-in and day-out each time you go into the field performing Home Inspections. Our curriculum is designed to systematically train each attendee by focusing on real world scenarios with hands on training. We will look at each aspect of the Home Inspection business including the state requirements, Standards of Practice, Ethics, day-to-day operations, setting up and operating a successful home inspection business, report writing and much more. Each session is taught by a successful, experienced and professional Home Inspector.

We do not spend any more time than is necessary on 'theoretical' situations. We will train you on what you will realistically need to do at each job to be a high-quality Home Inspector. We accomplish this by helping you understand and identify issues specific to our region in West Virginia/Ohio/Maryland. You will also be given an opportunity to upgrade your registration and learn even more from a successful home inspector on how to set up and run your business. This is invaluable to help you avoid the mistakes many home inspectors make when they first begin.
